[Serious] Redditors who gave up pursuing their 'dream' to settle for a more secure or comfortable life, how did it turn out and do you regret your decision?

So I originally wanted to be a doctor... specifically infectious disease (my mother had Lyme, and I saw how piss-poor the medical knowledge was 25 years ago about it, and the doctors would try and blame it on anything else but Lyme). I spent 3 years in school, and was about 6 months from my MCATs, when both of my parents got very sick. I had to drop out of school to work and pay bills for 2 households, as they were divorced, but still living in the same town. My fallback career was HVAC, so thats what I did, and am doing now. Currently, I'm near the top of my field in our region, and recently promoted to management. I get to work on some of the neatest stuff, and go some pretty cool places. While I know I'm underpaid for what I do and know, Florida surprisingly doesn't pay HVACR as much as they deserve, I still make a decent living. I do sometimes wish I had tried harder to get back to school, I know its just not going to happen.

So I guess it worked out ok, but certainly not the life I expected.
