[Serious] Travellers of Reddit, what are some of the creepiest/scariest experiences you've had abroad?

My parents, 5 siblings, uncles and cousins were fleeing the Somali civil war in a Toyota Coaster. We got stuck in gravel (Coasters have unusually small tires for the size of that vehicle). This was in a landmine filled area that was being swept by hired landmine sweepers. My uncle got a shuffle to remove the gravel from the right front tire so dad could back out when all of a sudden the shuffle hit a metal. The metal was a landmine. A bus with me and 20+ of my close family was on an active landmine that somehow didn't detonate. dad told us to all calmly get off the bus but he had to remain, foot firm on the brakes as one more wheel motion could trigger the thing. Few minutes later the sweepers came, did their magic, had my dad back out and we were on our way. That wasn't even the scariest part of that six hundred mile trip.
