Simon Stone: Re the England 'choosing' between finishing 1st and 2nd debate. If they go for 2nd, the team they end up facing would have been presented with the best motivation possible to win - namely opposition has made it clear they think we are no good.

I said some England fans, not all. My point is that trying against Belgium only to get hammered by them would not help England even if it did put them in the ‘easier’ side of the draw. It would highlight weaknesses for the next team they played to potentially exploit and hurt the confidence of the players involved.

If finishing second meant you played Colombia after getting hammered by Belgium would you actually be confident about reaching the quarter finals? This isn’t complicated, yet you appear to be having a very difficult time with it, and you don’t even seem to realise that you’re proving my point by dismissing a heavy defeat to Belgium as a problem.
