Slayyyter announces new single, “Cowboys,” out this Friday

I don't really think the major label version of this project is working. I think when her and Ay*sha Er*tica were cobbling together Britney homages from beats purchased off SoundCloud with cam girl money, it was interesting. It suggested an alternate history where Britney never left Louisiana and executed her vision on her own, outside the industry machine that enslaved her in our timeline. It was raw and edgy and real.

Now, it just feels like any other major label pop project, albeit without the benefit of a major label pop audience behind it. I understand that hardcore pop fans in the US are desperate to see this sort of artist make songs and videos with the type of big budgets that used to be de rigeur for the genre. It gets frustrating watching indie heroines like Allie X or FKA Twigs struggle to claim the limelight while legacy titans like Nicki and Britney languish on the sidelines. People want the spectacle, the big show. Makeup, choreo, camp, and lewks. I read the sub, I read the comments, I see the desire burning in the hearts of the faithful.

That stuff's not jut enough for me. I tire of seeing the same tropes get wheeled out over and over again. I'm not content with revivals of old aesthetics I once found exciting. I want something fresh, something incendiary, something raw. At one point this project seemed like it might have offered that, but now all I see is yet another struggling major label baby band trying to fit into a well-established archetype for the benefit of fans who are so desperate for a crumb of spectacle that they'll overlook sketchy tweets and the extremely suspicious nature of Atlantic's decision to hone in on the one white cis woman in a scene overwhelmingly made up of TWOC.

No Simon Cowell, but it's a "no" from me.
