A small gesture goes a long way

I can't hold this in any longer. I just have to say this.

Now, I see this kind of thing all the time. Players giving balls to kids. Fans giving balls to kids. I have to say...those kids don't care about that ball. I mean, they do. But it's just...As an adult, I'll never forget when I was 25 years old and I met my hero. I got his autograph and I will cherish that signature/moment for the rest of my life. It would just kill me if something happened to that autograph. If a kid gets something cool, they remember it for that day and move on. I believe that an adult who is a fan of baseball would cherish a homerun ball so much more than a child. But you have to give away the ball. I mean, it's a kid who's probably crying and it will make his/her day. The whole crowd wants you to give the ball away. But it's just so much more likely that the kid isn't going to care when he wakes up in the morning. But it would actually have meaning to an adult.

It's like that whole Batkid thing. I kept my mouth shut during that because I knew no one wanted to hear my sad, bitter thoughts regarding an entire town shutting down for a kid who's not going to even remember what happened in another year. The lengths so many people went to in order to make him happy for a short period of time.

Don't get me wrong. It's great to do things for other people. But I know one thing. If someone goes out of their way for me, I am over-filled with thankfulness. People go out of their way for children all the time. So the time you give the kid a baseball...it will be meaningful for all of one day. It's like a stunningly beautiful blonde woman who goes through her life with people constantly being nice to her and doing things for her. She's not going to appreciate it as much as, say...an average looking guy who isn't used to people helping him. I know I come across terribly right now. But I have been thinking this for a long time and I'm willing to accept the downvotes that will inevitably come my way.
