SSRIs and residency

You’ve been an anxious person for decades… you talking like since you were a kid?

If so, and if you don’t feel like the issue is “crippling,” I reckon it would be worth trying therapy rather than a medication because you probably got some unconscious baggage eating at you. (We all do, some pathologically and others less so.) But anyway, therapy is lower risk than medication(s), you might learn a lot about yourself, and it probably has a better chance of actually getting you better rather than simply treating your symptoms.

On the other hand, it’s likely a slower process (real good therapy can take months or years of consistent appointments—assuming you even find a good therapist) and it takes more effort (getting to appointments and also sitting with/sharing your feelings) on your part.

But, as a psych resident, if I prescribe meds, it’s usually with the intention of alleviating symptoms to help someone get more out of therapy. You wouldn’t prescribe pain meds to a rehab patient and then suggest she just skips the PT. My $0.02. Primary care docs who are also slinging these meds may have other thoughts.
