We started poking at selling smart home automation. It's not as far from the MSP wheelhouse as you might think.

Your idea is something I have been doing for 8 years. I own a MSP for over 20 years and have done some dabbling with a very wealthy clients home on the side, just for fun. He engaged me to be a technical project manager in 2012 on a $20mil renovation of his house. The cost of the Security, Crestron and Dynalite was over a $1mil. I was shocked as the servers, switches and IT gear that I supplied was tiny. What I did learn is that most of the gear going into homes is expensive and protected by proprietary protocols and certifications. This year I renovated his tech in the house, with new CCTV, server, switches and a phone system. Overall I have billed him just under $300k. He just wants the problems solved, never asks me for quotes and pays all invoices within 7 days. I have fitted out his other houses and will be completing a $70k tech installation in his new holiday house next week. If you can get the right clientele, then go for it.

I now have the enviable position of having a MSP business that is skyrocketing, but still wanting to keep doing my lifestyle business. I live and love tech, and playing with a $250,000 sound system or pairing a phone to a new Ferrari is a lot of fun
