The US didn’t go to war in Afghanistan in the 80s. We supported the Mujahideen in a war that the Soviet Union started by invading. It wasn’t women’s rights we had a problem with (the Karzai regime was also better with women’s rights than the Taliban and we supported them) it’s the USSR and their communist expansion. It was a Cold War battle, and as in the Cold War at large, the communists lost.
