Tax LLM who got BigLaw [AMA] pt2

Hey Everyone! I wanted to post an update for potential NYU Tax LLM students who are curious about how this year went in terms of employment outcomes. I'm procrastinating studying for my last final and I came this updated thread-Dogenfife gave me some advice last year when I was considering the program so I thought I should pay it forward for students considering the program.

As compared to Dogenfife's class-it seems like the percentage of Big Law exec comp positions went way up this year-the listing were as follows:

Exec comp: Cooley (Boston), DLA Piper (Silicon Valley), Goodwin (Boston), McGuireWoods (DC), Groom Law, Jones Day, Wilson Sonsini, Eversheds, Dechert, Paul Weiss, Freshfields, Kirkland Ellis, Davis Polk,

Gen Tax Listings: Cadwalader, Weil Gotschal, Jones Day, Ropes & Gray(half exec comp half gen tax position), Shearman Sterling, Squire Patton, Steptoe & Johnson (DC), Venable (LA)

SALT: PIllsbury Winthrop, Eversheds (I think a lot more interviewed in the fall but don't really remember)

Millbank, Mofo, and DLA Piper also interviewed pretty heavily during Spring OCI just before TIP for gen tax.

All listings were for NY unless I otherwise indicated-I also left out a 3 or 4 smaller firms interviewing in non DC/NY/LA/Boston areas

I'd say Dogenfife's guess of around 20 percent taking gen tax positions is still probably true-maybe a little less. I don't have a great guess for how many people who ended accepting exec comp despite all the listings-or at least I haven't heard of too many. In my opinion, this probably means firms will still be hiring like crazy for exec comp next year. I think one of the big things people were surprised for this year was how the majority of offerings were for exec comp as compared to general tax and I really think that trend will continue. Other NYU LLMss feel free to chime in if you disagree with this!

I'd say maybe a third of the class took Big4 gigs or regional law firm offers (Dallas/Atlanta/Chicago) in the fall. I talked with some other students this morning who wanted me to emphasize that:

  1. Be careful interviewing with Big 4 positions in the Fall. I've heard that a few people ended up getting offers and, not wanting to risk not getting a job in the spring, took the offer only to regret it down the road. This obviously cuts both ways-I'm sure there are a few people who got Big4 offers in the fall and end up regretting not taking it because they not only had to try really hard during fall finals, but may not have ended up with anything better in the Spring. My view is this-don't bother with Fall OCI if you don't think you'll take the offer if you get it-it's just a waste of time and you should probably be studying. Even if you do very poorly first semester, it's very very likely you can still land a Big4 job in the Spring through OCI or through TIP.

2.If you're from a non DC/NY region and want to go back and work at a firm there-reach out to firms BEFORE you show up to the program. A lot of the people who ended up going to regional Law Firms were talking with them before school started or shortly thereafter, and got jobs in the first few weeks of school or through Fall OCI. Great outcome for them-they got the job they want, and had the option to coast the rest of the year.

In terms of big 4-I'd say a little more than half our class ended up in Big4

-NY M&A offers were for around 120-125k base and 15 signing bonus.

-NY International was around 115 base with 10-15 signing bonus

-NTS was from 140-150k base and 10k signing

Anyways-just wanted to give everyone an update based on this year! If any other NYU LLMS have anything to add/disagree with anything I said feel free to reply in comments!
