Is there any good definition of Left Wing and Right Wing or are they just a loose affiliation of stereotypes?

Its a social construct that varies depending on the cohort.

For example the centre-right-wing of UK politics is broadly more left-wing than the centre-left of US politics.

as you are interested to hear my thoughts...

Within each cohort the left-right continuum is smooth, with no gaps. I'm not sure everyone would agree with my methodology, but a few years back I attempted to quantify the left-right-wingedness of UK newspapers based on the size of their readership. If you arranged all the newspaper readers in the UK from left to right, the centreground is entirely dominated by The Sun, centre-left is The Daily Telegraph and centre-right is The Daily Mail. Whilst these are generally considered right-wing newspapers, there simply aren't enough left-wing newspaper readers to justify the premise that The Guardian is centre-left.

The centre-ground is determined essentially by being the norm, without regard to any particular policy.
