TIL in 2005 a glitch in World of Warcraft allowed a plague to spread in the game leading non-infected players to abandon cities while those infected were forced into quarantines. It was later studied by epidemiologists to see how real life people would react to a pandemic.

Can you translate that to english?

Only one way to find out. This is gonna be a pretty long post, so buckle up.

  • Lvl4s: Level four missions, given by NPC factions. Level four missions are the most commonly run because they offer the highest ISK per hour to a solo player. There are five levels, but level five missions aren’t in highsec and aren’t soloable.
  • BS: Battleship. Largest sub-capital ship size.
  • T3: Tech three ship. Usually refers to tech three cruisers specifically. These ships are fairly small but very expensive, and are usually fit with expensive faction and deadspace modules. They can be configured to fill a wide variety of roles, and can be exeptionally powerful in both PvE and PvP.
  • ISK: Interstellar Kredits. In-game currency. CCP (EvE's developer) is an Icelandic company, and ISK is also the abbreviation for Icelandic Krona.
  • PLEX: Pilot’s License Extension. An in-game item that can be purchased with real money, redeemed for game-time, or sold for in-game currency. Many new players start playing EvE with the goal of eventually paying for their subscription with in-game money.
  • Carebear: Derisive term for players who exclusively run PvE content.
  • Nullsec: Space that is not controlled by CONCORD (in-game police). Most areas of nullsec are player-controlled.
  • Blobber: Derisive term for players within large nullsec alliances. Implies that they rely on sheer weight of numbers rather than player skill.
  • Ninjas: Players who exploit game mechanics in a very specific way that would take a very long time to explain.
  • Gankers: This term exists in most MMOs, but in EvE it specifically refers to suicide gankers. These are players who use cheap high-damage ships to kill ships with valuable cargo inside highsec before CONCORD can respond.
  • Arty: Artillery. Long-range weapon system with highest alpha of any weapon system in the game.
  • Nado: Tornado. Small battlecruiser that can fit battleship-size weapons. Basically, a glass cannon.
  • Alpha: The initial damage that a ship can do by firing one volley.
  • Active-fit: Refers to active tanking. Fit with modules in such a way as to survive incoming damage by repairing it. Most PvE ships are fit in this way.
  • Tengu: A type of tech three cruiser. Uses missiles, and therefore is particularly effective in solo PvE.
  • EHP: Effective hit points. Number of hit points, multiplied by average resist value. More useful, and therefore more commonly used, than actual hit point values.
  • EM: Electromagnetic. One of four damage types.
  • Basi: Basilisk. A type of logistics ship. The logistics role is referred to as "healer" in most other MMOs.
  • Nightmare: Expensive pirate-faction battleship. Nightmares are particularly popular amongst incursion runners.
  • VGs or Assaults: VG is short for Vanguard. Vanguards and Assaults are two types of incursion site. Incursion sites are PvE sites that require a group of players to complete.
  • Shinies: Expensive ships, fitted with expensive modules.
  • PUG: General gaming term, not specific to EvE. Either Pick Up Game or Pick Up Group.

Nearly there, now...

  • Avatar: A type of titan. Looks like a giant golden butt plug.
  • Pipe-bomb: Not sure quite how to explain this one. To put it as simply as possible, it’s a strategy that uses player-controlled ships as ammunition in a giant metaphorical missile-launcher. Here is a video on the subject that will probably serve to confuse you even further.
  • RvB: Short for Red vs. Blue. Two alliances in highsec that are constantly at war with each other. Often recommended to newer players who are interested in PvP, but each alliance also contains a number of veteran PvPers. RvB sometimes form "purple" fleets and roam lowsec.
  • Lowsec: Low security space. Between highsec and nullsec. CONCORD don’t intervene in player conflict but gate guns will still intervene.
  • Roam: Period of time spent roaming through a large number of systems in search of PvP combat.
  • POS: Player-owned starbase. A structure that players can erect, in orbit around a planet. Has various uses.
  • Titan: Largest ship-type currently in the game.
  • Staging system: A system that you're using as a base of operations.
  • Cloaky: Ships that are fitted with a cloaking device. Usually refers to specific ship types that are able to warp while cloaked, such as cov-ops and recon ships.
  • Cyno ship: A ship that is fitted with a cynosural field generator. Cynosural fields can be jumped to by capital ships from several systems away.
  • Bridge: Titans can create jump bridges to cynosural fields, which allow sub-capital ships to jump across multiple systems instantly.
  • Disco BS: Battleship fitted with smartbombs. Smartbombs deal AoE damage, centred on the user.
  • Warp: A way of moving between points in a system. Once in warp, players cannot stop until they reach their pre-determined destination.
  • Kitchen-sink: A term for “bring whatever you feel like” fleets. Players participating in kitchen-sink fleets are usually drunk, and are often flying shitfit ships.
  • Corpies: Members of your corporation. Corporations (or corps) are the EvE equivalent of guilds. Multiple corps can form an alliance.
  • Multiboxing: Controlling multiple ships by running multiple instances of the EvE client at once.
  • Doctrine fleet: Srs bsns fleet where members use ships and fits determined by the alliance leadership and the FC (fleet commander).
