TIL: On his second day in office, President Jimmy Carter pardoned all evaders of the Vietnam War drafts.

I'm the son of an immigrant from Vietnam(I'm born and raised in the US). My family is eternally grateful for what the US did. From their perspective they were losing their country and total strangers from the other side of the world were helping them fight back. We don't talk much about it to be honest, it's a dark time that they've tried to move on from. But they fully understand why people were opposed to the war and don't resent them at all.

My family members who came from Vietnam have lived successful lives in the US and became productive members of society. A few engineers and doctors. And my dad served in the US Navy for about 10 years. He got to serve on a ship that had previously seen some action in Vietnam. The first US born generation includes more doctors, a college professor, and a currently enrolled graduate student.

My point is that my family has used their opportunity for a new life in the US to its full potential and doesn't take it for granted. I won't get into the politics. I just hope people can see that amongst the most devastating and ugly aspects of the war is another positive side.
