national embarrassment

I know I'll get downvoted for this, but this statement isn't the most ridiculous thing. For one, over 50M people did die worldwide due to the Spanish flu, that's 100% true. Secondly, the pandemic technically started in 1918, so not too far off there, and you can't possibly think he actually meant WWII and didn't just slip up meaning to say WWI, because that did contribute significantly to the spread of that flu and partially influenced the war in ways. But if you seriously want to act like you've never slipped up when talking and switched something as simple and close in name as WWI and WWII, you need to grow up and stop making yourself feel better based off of others mistakes and just pushing them down to seemingly elevate yourself
