Totalbiscuit - I will now talk about DLC for about 18 minutes

Cosmetic DLC is unacceptable, because you are locking the community out of creating content and substituting your own for a fee. There was a time when the community offered tens of thousands of character skins, models, weapons, objects, and maps. For free. Massive websites had enormous databases you could skim through to find what you wanted to customize your experience. For free.

Developers have done away with this and substituted it with $5 blue-tints of existing skins or $2 leopard skin guns or $6 monster skins or $20 packs of three or four maps. They offer a negligible amount of options for customization and charge absurd prices for them while cutting out the community from having participation. On top of that, they have generally even stripped the capability of running your own servers for those games and charged for that, too.

Why do people have a problem with cosmetic DLC? Because it effectively takes a great system of robust free options and replaces them with a terrible system of few and expensive options. Then, they have the audacity to complain about how self-entitled their customers are, because they don't want to pay $120 for games. They are shameless enough to do this while simultaneously stripping things that used to be elements of gaming that were taken for granted and charging you to get a weaker version of them back. And shameless enough to say this while more games are selling more copies than ever (sure, games may have been about the same price for the last twenty years, but they also have a far bigger audience to which they're selling far more copies.

Additionally, there is no justification for maps splitting a community up. There is no reason Call of Duty needs to do this and Evolve shouldn't, either. There is absolutely no reason that matchmaking can not take into account what map is coming up next in a lobby and match together players who have that map.

When you nickel and dime your customers, expect them to take a cynical view of you and suspect any actions you ever take to be self-rewarding bullshit.
