This kind of behavior is what made me not want to be friends with other girls in school. I always gravitated towards boys for friendship. When I got older, I found other females that did not treat each other this way. My female friends that I have now tell me how beautiful and awesome I am just how I am, and I do the same for them. We celebrate each other, and build each other up as someone you consider a friend would do. Someone who places you in direct competition with you no matter how long you have known them is not a "friend" it sounds to me like your friend is jealous of you. I am sorry you are having to deal with this. If a person won't let you bring them up, but rather demands that you be torn down, they should be cut loose. Talk to her about it if you do value the friendship, otherwise feel no remorse for looking out for your own self esteem. No one gets to tell anyone how best to be themselves.
