They have been whipped into a frenzy by a media machine built on blatant lies. Republicans are convinced that if democracy persists, it means that they will be forced to house immigrants and tolerate interracial gay sex over the family breakfast table.

However, republicans also know that they are a literally dying minority and they do realize that authoritarian fascism is the only hope for them to impose their antiquated worldview on an increasingly urban society that wants nothing to do with that noise. They have picked their fuhrur and they are actively trying to suppress the ability of people living in large cities to vote and are actively trying to allow rightwing bureaucrats to reverse electoral results under the guise of unproven fraud. The conspiracy to undermine democracy and destroy the republic runs all the way up to the Supreme Court.
