The Walking Dead S08E01 - Mercy - Post Episode Discussion

I'm only 15 minutes into the episode and I had to pause because my mind couldn't help but think.

“I love this show.” From Ricks first steps, the sound of the chain on the Hospital doors with the big black bold letters DON’T DEAD OPEN INSIDE, the fallen bike and the slow crawl, Watching Rick on his horse slowly walking to the city and thinking “This movie doesn't have much time left there's no way they're going to wrap up all the loose ends in… Oh Gods it's a TV show there's going to be more, much more.”

After years of watching the show I can't help but feel fear. A fear born from the writing style in Game of Thrones and solidified by the death of Glenn. When Carl was shot I wasn't afraid, worried, but there was no real fear. He can't die I thought, he's too big of a plot point for Rick. Now, I don't know what to think. My certainty is lost and as I watch the characters I've grown to know go to war, I fear.

They could lose. Sure, not right away, not in the first episode of the season, but this could be the last season. They could all the die. I see the look on Glenn's face and think, It could happen. The writers could do it too, going slow at first making it look dramatic with each episode looking more and more grim than the last, Stretching our ability to Hope, Counting on what's left of our certainty that everything is going to be okay. Only to leave a small spark of our dreams by not saying what happens to Judith.

Maybe it'll be okay maybe only a few of our loved ones will die. “I love this show.” And I can honestly say ‘I Fear the Walking Dead.”
