Well personally, I wouldn't count on getting a traditional "career" where you get a regular paycheck (if anyone has any ideas, please enlighten me).

For location independent work, I would look at freelancing on UpWork or something similar. If you have a unique skill you can make really good money. It has to be something marketable though. Lots of people can write ebooks. But not everyone can write compelling sales copy, or design effective ads. Look to master a unique skill, build a portfolio, and be prepared to suck wind for a while. You have to gain feedback to command the higher rates. There are guys on there making $900+ for each sales letter, but they have proven results.

You can also do affiliate marketing. You can do this online through an affiliate network, and/or contact local businesses and offer your services directly. This can include designing their marketing materials, running ad campaigns for them, blogging on their website to increase SEO etc. I'm dabbling in these things right now. Once you learn how to market products, it's like a license to print money. If you can sell someone else's product, you can sell your own.

You can also sell products online. If you source some quality products that allow private labeling, you can sell on your own website, Amazon, eBay, etsy etc. Or create your own products. I'm currently selling on Amazon. It makes me some good residual income, but I don't plan on this blowing up anytime soon. A word of caution, don't go this route unless you have something unique and high quality to sell. Importing and private labeling is getting more popular by the day. The market is getting saturated and it's harder than ever to stand out from the competition. This is more of a business with real risk though, which isn't for everybody.

This is just scratching the surface, and I'm by no means an expert at any of this. Basically, think of yourself as a business as opposed to an employee. Then you can consult/freelance or sell your own product or service directly to consumers.
