That’s the safe bets if you really don’t know, but it can depend on the locale, time of year, time of day, inside or outside, personalities of the bride and groom, and whether anyone has said it’s to be very formal like black tie.

I’ve been to probably 30 weddings in a lot of places in the US and the decorum changes a lot with these variables. Most of the weddings I’ve been to are in the southern US and it’s really not that taboo to wear a more fun suit to a wedding if you want, provided that it’s not black tie and your outfit isn’t tacky. Even at the black tie events I’ve seen people in non-traditional colored tuxedo jackets and it wasn’t an issue. After the solemn ceremony, it is a big party after all so you don’t have to be overly conservative.
