I don't know if you realize this but economic mobility has been drastically going down overall in the United States during the last decade. The "American Dream" soon wont really be reachable for most even with lots of hard work if you didn't come from a wealthy family that was already living that dream

There's just a lot of things about our country and local politics that people just don't want to see that are going on all around them because they want to cling to an over idealized vision of the place they are from.
