What does /antiwork think of the tipping industry? I used to work as a server and immediately wondered why I had to rely on customers to pay my bills

Using a percentage of the total bill, to decide how much of a tip you give is a stupid idea.

A tip should be earned, not expected.

If a server simply "does their job" they get no tip. If they're very friendly, attentive and polite with me. They'll get a tip. But I never base it on a percentage of the bill. That makes literally no sense.

The server has been exactly the same amount of friendly, attentive and polite to me and my family (so a table of 4, upwards of $100 total bill for example), as they've been to a guy on his own buying a $10 meal deal.

Why is their attitude worth $20 at my table, but only $2 for the other guy?

I prefer to have a set figure in my head - depending on the establishment - as to how much I'm willing to tip for good service. It's not based on % it's based on the value I as a customer, put on that good service.
