What is the fastest way for me, as an American, to become legally married to my partner who is a Canadian and be able to start working in Canada?

"Fast" isn't really something you can pin your hopes on when it comes to immigration, so I would mitigate that expectation.

There are two types of sponsorship: broadly termed 'inland' and 'outland,' outland applies to applicants who are not living in Canada, while inland is for those who are living in Canada.

With an inland application, you can submit an open work permit application that will allow you to work during processing. This option is not available to outland applicants.

Throughout 2021, the majority of new applicants have not received their work permit, instead receiving their permanent residence first. This would mean that, should you go the inland route without obtaining a different work permit on your own, you would have to be living in Canada on visitor status for the duration of the processing.

The official processing time for spousal sponsorship is 12 months. While some people see shorter processing, some people see longer. You should be prepared for the full 12 months, though 2021 applicants have been seeing quicker processing, with many people receiving their PR around 6-8 months.

Going the sponsorship route, you're likely looking at a minimum of 6 months before you'd be able to work in Canada, based on the processing we've been seeing this year.

If you were to obtain a work permit on your own merits, it might be quicker.
