What was a great thing ruined by popularity?

Marrakech. I grew up in Morocco for a couple of years, and from what I've heard from my friends still living there the city is a Western idea of what Morocco is like and no longer a genuine portrayal of the culture. Also, they've been taking natural resources from other parts of the country ( ex: fully grown trees in the middle of the city that have been there for 70+ years) to make Marrakech more appealing to tourists. So basically the popularity of the city is robbing the rest of the country slowly.

Oh also, recently visited again after 8 years, and there's more graffiti, obvious bars and clubs that have been souring the city's traditions (according to people native there).
