what do you think makes Hollywood believe attacking an IP's fan base is a profitable strategy?

Well, it worked for Disney, Marvel, and...what a minute!

I think the industry is dominated by business types, who don't know or care about the fans. They see it as anything else to be sold and they want to expand the market. If they see a fanbase, they see a larger potential fanbase, and they want to reach that.

So if you have a thousand die-hard fans of something, these types will say "if 1000 people like it so much, then what is stopping millions from doing the same if we alter it to fit that market!".

They just don't get it, in other words.

They do tend to focus on markets where the fanbase is male, and probably young or niche, and their might be a racial component (but I'm not sure about that as I don't know the market). If they ever look at what black females like, and try to expand the market, they might get the same reaction. It would be an eye-opener to them that different demographics like different things sometimes.
