Since women have been able to earn money more or less on par with men, it's a lot more common for people to marry within their "class" or earning bracket.
from all i've read, it seems women will marry their class or higher.
look at china, a country that has 30 million more men than women because of the one child policy.

the women are the richest class of women in china. because women don't want to marry down, and men are happy to, the top class of women are always the most likely to not marry (along with the poorest men). there are of course far more leftover men, but they are peasants, who the rich women would never consider marrying.
honestly though, this is almost common sense. men want sex, women want resources. this explains:

any man from a country richer than another, can go to that other country and get a young pretty bride (have you ever been to less developed nations? western men can have any woman if they want if they'll marry her). in north east asia, the poor often source brides from south east asia for example.
