It might be worth noting that it is at least visually similar (both have a circle of stars on the union, both have horizontal red and white stripes) to the first Confederate national flag. This is, as far as my google searches tell me, a visual similarity alone and not any purposeful design detail. It seems to be similar enough that one may be mistaken for the other to the unaided eye.
