What’s this sub’s thoughts on the ‘When A Stranger Calls’ (2006) remake?

Love it. It's one of my favorite horror movies to rewatch or have on in the background. I'd already loved the original, and especially at the time it came out as I was an avid babysitter back then. However, on re-watches it's pretty boring after the first 20 minutes. It becomes a typical 70s cop drama.

The remake is so much better and I personally feel the suspense and tension from the very beginning. I've read reviews of it and I think people needlessely tear it apart with petty grievances. I just have fun with it without nitpicking.

Camilla Belle did a wonderful job carrying this film basically on her own.

Spoiler below:

My only quibble is the kids hiding. I'm not sure, did they hide in that trunk or did he put them in there? If they hid, what happened to scare them enough to hide?
