What is a seemingly mundane question you can ask somebody that will tell you a lot about their personality?

When I was in high school I was some version of "bullied" quite a bit, as an awkward loser kind of kid without any friends. One day a kid came up to me in gym and asked if I was gay, and I immediately thought that this was leading to some kind of cruel joke. I went off on the kid, and afterwards he just walked away silently. I found out afterwards that he wasn't trying to be mean to me, he was gay, and his friends told him to try to talk to me since they (correctly) deduced somehow that I was LGBT, too. He was just trying to make a friend, and I basically did the worst possible thing he could have imagined would happen in that situation. I still feel like an asshole about it sometimes - I never even knew the guy's name, so I can't even apologize.
