What is something important that a 17 year old should learn RIGHT NOW?

I'm up voting you because I agree 100%. This year in the first 6 months I dropped about 30 lbs, and in the last 6 months gained another 15 going to the gym 3x per week. I've been visiting my parents at home for a couple weeks and I am hankering to get back to my gym. And I hate exercise.

What I love, though, is the way I feel when I'm done. I love that feeling of accomplishment; you'll hate the exercise, but I'll be very surprised if you ever regret doing it after. I love how my first workouts kicked my ass, and every subsequent one kicks my ass a little less, until what seemed hard is now laughably easy and what seemed unreachable is now routine. I love how, even though I'm still a long way from my goals, I'm able to walk upright, chest out, and feel good, instead of hunched over to hide my belly while avoiding eye contact.

Ideally, find an exercise you like. I like biking given the right conditions, but abhor running. But I think the most important thing is to do the exercise that best fits your goals and stick with that, because it's the progress that'll keep you coming back. For me that's lifting. When I first started lifting in the summer, I joined a gym for the first time in my life with two roommates. It helped me start the process. They don't go anymore. I almost stopped when I had no one to come with me, but then found that I prefer exercising alone. Consistency is the most important thing, and making actually going to the gym as easy as possible. And believe me, any initial excitement you have, if there's any at all, will wane. Now instead of wondering if I'll go or not, I think that it's just what I do now. I can't wait until summer.
