Earlier this year I was living in Chicago in a studio apartment with a roommate. Our beds were next to each other and down the hallway next to us was the front door. We lived on the 42nd floor of a skyscraper and knew nobody in the building. Suddenly, at 3 in the morning someone rings the doorbell (and for some reason our doorbell sounded like it was the doorbell from hell; it had a long, hollow low ring). I couldn’t believe what was happening and thought I was dreaming since my roommate was asleep. Then, I heard a light knock followed by another long hollow ring from the doorbell. My roommate finally woke up. After about 30 seconds we heard a light knock followed by three loud bangs on the door. After another moment of silence, ice slid through my bones as I heard in a shy delicate voice say, “tanner? I know you’re in there.” My roommate and I started quietly freaking out, not knowing who it could it be. The knocking and doorbell ringed lasted for another 5 minutes and then we heard footsteps leave the door. Realizing we hadn’t dead bolted the door, we jumped out of our beds and locked it. Till this day we have no idea who it was.
