If you had a piece of gold, you could cut it in half and have two smaller pieces of gold. Cutting it would not change what it is. You could cut a piece of gold in half many times. It would still be gold each time. Eventually, there would be a smallest piece. If you cut the smallest piece in half, what remains isn’t gold anymore. That smallest piece is called an atom. Atoms do not have to be gold. They can be iron, copper, or many other things. There are nearly a hundred different kinds of atoms in nature, and everything is made by fitting them together in different ways. Everything in our universe was once packed into a space smaller than an atom. We call this the singularity. It burst, and there was only chaos. Gravity pulled everything into clumps over billions of years. One of those clumps is Earth. As it formed, some atoms became arranged in a way that caused nearby atoms to arrange similarly. We call this life. The new forms were babies. Like us, they were a lot like their parents, but not the same. The differences could help or hurt their chances of having offspring. Useful traits helped lucky creatures have more or better children while hurtful traits died over time. More children from better parents meant a better gene pool for the next generation to further improve. Over time, this made cells. Later, division of labor inside cells made them more effective. Then, cells started working together. Collectively, the cells survived great external adversity for too many generations to count. We call this evolution. It is guided by nature’s crucible requiring traits effective enough to enable a creature to persevere through its life until it has prepared its progeny to do the same. You are a product of evolution, and your purpose in life is to further it.
