What is your extremely niche hobby and how did you get into it?

I restore vinyl rips. By that I mean, tranferring old vinyl records to digital format and then clean them up so they sound clean and not full of clicks and other noise common to vinyl.

A lot of the music I listen to only exists on vinyl, more specifically old deleted vinyl that is rare and expensive. After I've paid a hundred quid for a very rare record I'm not going to play it a lot since this will wear it out, so I record it.

I'm nerdy so I started to analyse the rips in a DAW, studying the wafeform and spectrogram etc. and I it became clear to me what noise such as clicks etc. looked like. Then I discovered techniques for removing these clicks. Now I've honed my techniques for nearly 20 years and can make a good rip sound perfect and a crap rip sound adequate.

I've become absolutely obsessed with sound quality these days.
