Middle-aged expat here... US expats are treated like fucking pariahs by the US government thanks to FACTA.

Because some asshole billionaire decided to squirrel away his money in the British Virgin Islands I now have to provide all of my bank account records and bank balances to the US government every year or face a fine that would potentially bankrupt me.

What's worse is there are only a handful of banks that will even accept me as a customer because foreign banks don't want the hassle of dealing with a US customer because thanks to treaties, if you accept a US customer you now have a reporting requirement to the US government as a foreign bank.

What's worse is that you can actually get double taxed if you start your own business in a country that doesn't have a proper tax treaty with the United States... and it gets even worse. You have to fill out a special set of forms if you own a company overseas and provide all of your employees information to the US government as if they were working on US soil so they know how many people and who a US citizen employs overseas.

Even if you owe no money to the government you will spend hours collecting all the information you need and spend sometimes thousands of dollars to properly file your taxes.

Going to the embassy is about as much fun as visiting a prison. You make your appointment weeks in advance, you get one window to show up. All of your belongings except essential documents are taken from you and you have to speak to embassy employees from the other side of bulletproof glass in a room that has a kill box at the entrance.

All so that when I fly home I can sit in a goddamn customs pre-clearance room for 2 fucking hours and be asked questions like "so why did you leave America? Why don't you move home? Why are you visiting your family? Why did you move so far away?"

When my child was born overseas I had to prove that I had lived in the US for four years of my adult life before they would give my child a passport or a birth certificate. The fact that I was a fucking citizen didn't mean shit.

That's what I've wanted to bitch about. US expats are basically goodwill ambassadors for the US that help spread American interests and the Federal government treats us like tax cheats and criminals.
