When a "gut feeling" saves you from the man waiting for you in a doorway

Absolutely.

When I was 18-19, I lived in Buford, GA, alone (I'd separated from my husband at the time). I worked at a convenience store and lived alone in an awful trailer. Being from the north, I wasn't used to the heat, so I took to taking walks for air/exercise late at night/early in the morning (between 11PM-2AM). I'd stop to watch this band practice in an open shop in a strip mall, and just meander around until I felt like sleeping, then I'd walk home.

One night, I realized I was being followed by a cop car. Didn't think much of it. It happened a few more times, until one night, the car pulled up next to me, and this blond cop asks me if I wanted a ride home. When I refuse, he starts asking me what I'm doing out so late, where I'm going, etc. From the time that cop car pulled up alongside me, the deep gut alarm bells were going off in every cell in my body. I'd never feared cops before this - never had a bad interaction with them, but this had my my heart in my throat. I've only ever had this reaction to one other person (a truck driver who came through my work). I stayed as calm as I could on the outside and answered his questions. I had to refuse his offer of a ride home two more times in the conversation - I stayed as far as I could from his car door. I never took another walk late at night again.

Listen to your gut.
