I used to work in a retail clothing store. Our performance as managers was judged based off of our sales numbers, which were tracked when the cashier entered the employee number of whoever helped the customer.

My direct manager stole sales. I could help a customer find a $1600 wardrobe for their vacation, and she would sell them a lip gloss and claim the sale as hers. I didn't much care, after all the customer's still came back to see me and not her. I was also the favorite manager at the store because I never got upset or yelled at anyone.

And then we had an audit and discovered that $40,000 worth of clothing was missing. She did her best to convince the auditors that I was stealing clothes and other things from the store; including the revelation that there had been an envelope full of prize money in the safe that was missing. Money that neither I nor the other assistant manager even knew existed

The auditor didn't fall for her tricks. But after that, she made my job a living hell trying to get me to quit. It eventually ended with her getting corporate to fire me; but when I walked out the door, so did all but one of their sales associates.
