Wife had a small procedure done. I paid cash to all involved: the doctor, the hospital and the anesthesiologist. All of them sent me a bill afterwards

So the reason you received a series of bills from all three is because they each have their own charge.

If you paid the physician fee up front in cash/self pay and they still billed you, their billing department might not have applied your payment to the bill in time before their monthly statements went out. This was an error.

As for the other two bills from the facility and anesthesiologist, these are expected and someone should have explained that to you up front especially if you were self pay.

The easiest way to explain this type of situation is a maternity patient. There will always be 2 or 3 different bills. One for the physician delivering the baby, one from the hospital for using the facility to deliver the baby and last from the anesthesiologist (if needed).

Majority of the times each of the 3 are separate and independent of their own UNLESS you go to some type of clinic in which everything is rolled all into one bill.

I am sorry this happened and that no one explained it to you. As for the hospital and anesthesiologist bills they might have separate offices and billing department. You mentioned being self pay - see if they have a self pay discount as most places do.
