With the firing of Les Miles, are we entering an era in college football where the expectations are so high they are completely incompatible with the current parity?

There were several stretches like that in the article. Hell, the line about "college football's most competitive division" doesn't even make sense in this context. The only two teams that have been consistent powerhouses out that division during this time period are Alabama and LSU itself.

Auburn is phenomenal about once every 3 years or so but has had a lot of down years during that time span. Arkansas had a couple real strong years but is extremely inconsistent. Over most of Miles' tenure the Mississippi schools were more down than up. And Texas A&M is a recent addition and has been up-and-down.

Really, what makes that division considered "the most competitive division" in CFB in recent years is mostly just Alabama and LSU, with a side order of a couple really good Auburn years. And since LSU doesn't compete with themselves, all that line really means in this context is "LSU was in the same division as Alabama." That's a reason to maybe excuse 1 loss a year, not all of them.
