Would it suck to be afraid of dogs in America/Canada, considering most chicks are into them and have them as pets? How would you get around this problem?

If you want to get over it (which is up to you), than it would be to find what it is exactly about them that scares you and why. Do you fear a random attack? Do you think they're carrying disease? Filthy? Were you attacked in the past? Getting knocked over (even by a friendly dog)?

I'm sure there are plenty of articles out there on overcoming the fear. But the simplest means would be to find someone with a not only friendly dog, but a calm dog. Preferably a lazy one that just lays there and won't get up to come to you unless you call it.

Have that friend over or go to your friends (though you may be more comfortable at home). Hang around it, do anything BUT directly associate with it. Just do...normal things. Watch how you can just do...anything and it be alright.

Once you're comfortable moving around your house at a distance doing these normal things, you can try to do things closer to it. Don't push yourself, wait til you feel comfortable and slowly make it til you can just sit and watch tv with it there and you barely notice its existence. After awhile you can move to giving it a treat (put it on the ground, don't use your hand). Maybe pet it. Go for a walk with the owner and the dog (owner with the lead), then...you take the lead.

I'm treating this a bit with how I'd treat an animal that is afraid of something. Never pushing, just...slow progression. It would take time, that's for sure.

I have friends terrified of birds, some of which have come to my house to try to fix it and...it's worked and that's generally how we did things...minus the walks.

Just hanging out etc etc, until physical contact is comfortable.

Meanwhile it's my dog that I had to show that children weren't terrifying. (To be fair, she was fine with kids until some rowdy children ran at her SHRIEKING and one tried to kick her. Which caused her to hide behind me whenever they were around after that. I borrowed my niece to help get her over that. She loves kids again.)

If you don't want to work on the fear well...there are plenty of people that don't care for dogs or prefer cats so....there are still plenty of fish in the sea for you :)
