2015 Veteran's Day Free-For-All

My instructor at Finance BOLC was everything the Army sought to espouse in a leader but at the same time with none of the unnecessary bullshit that seems too often to come with it. Years before he was Armor as an enlisted man with a few deployments down range, went green-to-gold, asked for Armor but got put in Finance of all branches.

Nobody really knew him, I mean that in the sense that he was over the top positive and acted like how you would think a log guy would act, small guy, but all my new Lieutenant peers knew there was something dark under that creeping out onto the surface taking the form of massive scars across his face (and a BSMV). At first, nobody bothered to ask how he got those scars out of common decency, that's not something you usually ask a person, but at the end of my course he opened the floor to all questions and motioned towards his face. Mike, west point guy, humbled and down to earth, broke the tension in the room and raised his hand and my instructor nodded. Ever listen to a story that was delivered lighthearted but the content was traumatic?

Afghanistan 2006 pre-sure, was about to go on leave but let his Soldier go instead for his wedding, on a routine patrol in an area with inconsistent activity, the other elements at his FOB would go out on patrols and come back over exaggerating the degree of contact they had and everybody knew this; naturally, the LT responsible for organizing QRF response became hesitant to send out anything heavy.

Jack, the LT, had caught some flak by his boss man for being too quick to send out QRFs to these gung ho full of shit PLs and my instructor dealt with that fall out; I assume you know where this is going. Empathy for him was rare when you have a bullet enter one cheek and out the other side below the temple after being hit then flanked with your shit jocked around by some LT telling you not to fall back and that QRF was getting there in five minutes 30 minutes ago. Fast foward a few years and he's lucky to be alive and says being forced branched into Finance was the best thing that had ever happened to him, gets to spend time with his wife and two kids now, although it messed something up in his nasal cavity and now he's allergic to alcohol. For those wondering what was the point of this, look at the first letter of each sentence.
