Those were garbage. Thankfully on our roto in Kuwait our unit CWO is a great guy who doesn't possess the typical dinosaur mentalities. He basically said, in not so many words, "I don't give a fuck what you wear as long as it's steel-toed and helps you do your job to the best of your ability since you're the ones pounding the pavement all day and I'm not." We had some guys get used boots from the American charity/donation sea container (a place where people donated books/clothes/dvds/etc prior to going home) and they were worlds above the Cdn crap. I swear to god some of the people running the show in Kuwait were more concerned with policing uniform patches and organizing daywalker volleyball tournaments than getting the air det functional equipment.

The people I really felt bad for was Roto 0, who for a time had to change out of coveralls and back into combats to go from the flight line to the FLIGHT LINE kitchen due to the camp cwo at the time. In casual conversation it got mentioned to a USMC guy working in the ospreys and he said "what kind of idiots are you guys working for?" Says a lot coming from a marine considering what they put up with daily.
