After listening to what Malfurion and Tyrande have to say about Illidan

Basically yeah. It is easy to forget that the Night Elves were introduced as an ancient race that were incredibly xenophobic, looked down on other races, magic users, etc. No diplomacy towards the Orcs or the humans that settled on Kalimdor until Medivh forced them. Tyrande saw them as lesser races basically. She didn't want to work with them.

And honestly, outside of books she has been consistent in that. In MoP she was headstrong and going to rush in, like she did in WC3 with the orcs. In Suramar she looks down on the nightborne as mana addicts and betrayers, etc. Varian was the one really holding her in check and playing the diplomat for the Alliance (Cata's war was over nelves lumber trade basically, and by MoP he is the one to convince her to reopen trade). It was in the books that she was portrayed more heroically.

Tyrande specifically is basically WoW's version of that military general in movies that thinks diplomacy is a waste, they are powerful so will do what they want regardless of the consequences, etc. They should have her on Teldrassil's island after starting an amusement park for dinosaurs. Nothing will go wrong.
