Alaska will become the 30th state to accept Obamacare’s optional Medicaid expansion, after Gov. Bill Walker (I) announced on Thursday that he will use his executive power to bypass the GOP-controlled legislature and implement the policy on his own.

I feel that Medicaid is a necessity for many, many Americans. However, I also feel that the benefits should be limited to those who are making an honest effort to better their situation. My brother and sister in law are currently on Medicaid, WIC, and other various social programs while neither work or even look for work. They live in a house rent free due to the fact that my parents own it and feel guilty that their grandchildren would live in low income housing without it.

My wife is a doctor and I have degree in business and together we have 250k in student loans. Our health insurance through the government marketplace ( neither of us are offered health insurance through our jobs) comes to $700/month for a plan that has a moderate deductible and limited coverage. We have one child and are afraid of having a second since the cost of having our daughter was nearly $5,000 out of pocket. We have two cars (one paid off) that are 8 years old and have a mortgage of $1,500/mo. We practically never spend money on entertainment or unnecessary items. We are not in terrible shape, but we know that should an emergency come up, our savings could be gone very quickly.

My brother and sister in law own two 2013 cars (gifts from the parents), go to the movies 2-3 times/week, pay $175/mo for their cable/Internet for his gaming habit, she gets her hair and nails done every two weeks, and they are expecting their 3rd child.... All without any actual income. They got a tax return last year for over $4k while my wife and I ended up paying over $5k to the IRS because she was classified as an independent contractor and didn't know about setting up an LLC. (Lesson learned on that one)

Our situations couldn't be more different and neither could our forms of spending. It's infuriating seeing them go on vacation, buying coach bags, buying the new iPhone 6 plus, etc while bitching about how the government doesn't give a damn about them. Everything is handed to them as long as they "play the game" and I'm so sick of it. I consider myself middle of the road politically, but in this area I agree more with Republicans.

TLDR: too many people take total advantage of social programs and it ruins it for the people who actually use them for their intended purpose.
