Aldon Smith is “mad and frustrated” over lack of decision on his status

So just some food for thought here. These are what were Indefinite or year-long suspensions handed out by the league in the last 5 years:

  • Jonathan Vilma - Entire 2012 season, later overturned

  • Ray Rice - Indefinite in September 2014. Overturned 2 months later after new policies regarding domestic violence.

  • Tanard Jackson - Indefinite for Substance Abuse in August 2012. Reinstated May 2014

  • Brandon Browner - Indefinite for Substance Abuse in December 2013. Reinstated March 2014

  • Fred Davis - Indefinite for Substance Abuse in February 2014. Reinstated May 2015

  • LaVon Brazil - Entire 2014 season in July 2014. Later changed to 10 games with the league's new penalties for testing positive for marijuana

  • Josh Gordon - Entire 2014 season in August 2014. Later changed to 10 games with the league's new penalties for testing positive for marijuana

  • Josh Gordon (chronologically, there's no player in between) - Entire 2015 season in February 2015. Entered rehab and hasn't been back yet though would have been on the field this year after being reinstated by the league in the offseason.

  • Dion Jordan - Entire 2015 season in April 2015. Reinstated July 2016

  • Aldon Smith - Entire 2015 season in November 2015.

  • Frank Alexander - Entire 2015 season in November 2015. No reinstatement yet

Three additional players on Indefinite or year long suspensions from 2016. They don't need to be included here.

What I notice here is that Ray Rice is the only player to be reinstated during the season, and that came from the courts not the league.

Simply put - if it's up to the league, they do not like to allow a player on an indefinite suspension to return during the middle of a season. Josh Gordon would be the only player to have done so.

I fully expect the league to either not announce a decision until after the Super Bowl or that they will announce he is eligible to return next season.
