[AMA Request] Sprint IP Relay Operator

1) Yes, during the day most calls are legitimate users making the same phone calls anyone else would 2) That information is confidential 3) No 4) That information is confidential 5) Some, my job didn't effect it

For those not familiar with relay operators, they help deaf and hard of hearing people make phone calls. Back in the day people would use TTYs (basically a phone with a keyboard) to call a relay operator, then type what they wanted to say. The operator would call the number, explain what relay is, then read the user's message. The person on the phone replies, and you type back to the user, and so on.

Not a bad idea, it works pretty well, helps primarily older people with severe hearing loss communicate, and is essential for 911 calls and ordering pizza.

This worked fine when you had to have a TTY to make the calls (the phones were pretty expensive) but eventually it started going online, so that anyone could go to a website and get a relay operator. What's said is all confidential so I can't go into any detail, but I'm sure you can imagine what type of person would really get off on having a live human say whatever they type and what they'd use that kind of service for.

Unfortunately for the operators, there's no such thing as 'abuse' in this system. Whatever's said HAS to be communicated - I believe under protection of the Americans with Disabilities Act, but I could be wrong on that. The point is that if you have to sit there and take whatever you get. And yes, legitimately deaf or hard of hearing users would wait hours to make their phone calls as a result. Various other types of abuse happened but again this is all protected under pretty strict confidentiality rules.

Did I mention this is 100% funded by taxpayers?

Outside of how disgusting or immature you have to be to enjoy the abuse of this kind of system, the fact that you could be holding up a 911 call from someone's grandma makes you an automatic world class piece of shit in my book.
