Americans who have been to nightclubs and bars in the UK, how do they compare to the US?

Most clubs in the US play rap or hip-hop, they will usually have a bar near the entrance and at the back, with a dance floor somewhere in between. Most have some form of DJ spinning rap and hip hop or some form of electronica from breakbeat to house to drum n bass (the electronic clubs are very rare -- and almost never like this club I went to in Amsterdam), or will be a country-themed club where people dress up in their finest boots and stetsons (usually in the south, or the midwest) -- many of these have a mechanical bull.

The exclusive ones, that are almost always best, are in the major cities. You mostly have to be a good looking person to get into them, or know people, or be a celebrity.

Parties are almost as rare except out west or northeast or down in Miami. The parties I've been to in the US weren't anything like WinterWorld, Nature One, or Kings of the Jungle (doesn't exist any more -- drum and bass, that year they were mostly from the UK (Andy C, etc.)) parties or music festivals I went to over there.
