I have an opportunity to talk to The Adjutant General today about retention. What are some of the reasons you're getting out of the National Guard?

Oh, I'm sure he was hated at the school. Never there, but always getting paid.

He was very "political" in the Guard and very much the micromanager. He was always sucking up to the right people at the right time, and working for him was very high stress. He was the guy who did everything himself to make sure it was done correctly, and hardly let his team do their job.

For example, we were a signal company, and all our signal equipment was in shelters on the back of humvees. Basically, were were given a grid coordinate, occupy the site, set up an antenna and install a link to the distant end, then tear it down and do it all over again. He'd let us drive until we got within a few clicks of the site, then pull over and drive to the site to make sure we didn't get lost. We could put up the antenna, but we weren't allowed in the shelter. It was all him, programming the radios and installing the link. Once it was in, he'd leave with strict orders that if the link went down or weakened, we had to get him to come fix it, even though we all learned at AIT how to do everything.

He did everything and we just sat and watched.
