Anyone achieved a high net worth with a middle class job?

Grandfathers net worth when he died in 2010 was ~8m. He was a farmer, and when I was a kid their farmhouse was completely run down. Holes in the walls, huge cracks in ceiling, kitchen from 1950s minus 1980s appliances. Bathroom was a toilet under the stairs. Furniture was also 20/30 year old cheap stuff. Food was always “from scratch country food”, all fruits and vegetables from cans. Water had iron bits and sulfur in it. Basically lived like he and my grandmother were impoverished.

He inherited the family farm in 1945 which was 150 acres In the Midwest. Added another 200 over the years. Corn/soybeans/hogs. When he died, we learned he had 3 million in stocks and the 350 acres was worth around 5 million. We had no idea. He was so tight fisted and I received $5 gifts at Christmas in the 90s. He literally didn’t spend any of his savings, except whatever his hospitalizations cost. He was born in that farmhouse and died in it.

Today? My grandmother is still alive and is also not spending anything. She’s 95 and likes to read books and watch TV. The same thing she’s done in the 40 years I’ve known her.
