Australians are warned about the possibility of a "humiliating arrest" for unregistered gun owners.

Do you happen to have any documentation stating as such?

I have only been digging for a couple minutes, but this is so far the best I have found :

This appears to show a drop in "gun deaths" from 1996 by about 50% (which does NOT justify the ban!!) https://www.gunpolicy.org/firearms/compareyears/10/total_number_of_gun_deaths

I didn't put the numbers into Excel, and its very subjective, but just from glancing at "massacre" incidents per year (appears to be defined at 4 deaths in a given incident), there does appear to be a SLIGHT decline in gun deaths, according to this : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_massacres_in_Australia

The thing is (I know, I am preaching to the choir, but I just want to make available the hard evidence for my argument, so other may also use it in their own interactions with grabbers) that when you make considerations of things like :

Overall homicide by country : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_intentional_homicide_rate#/media/File:20201023_UNODC_Intentional_homicides_by_country_-_highest_rates_and_most_populous_countries.png

Suicide rates : Gun vs Non-gun : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suicide#/media/File:2010_suicide_rates_-_gun_versus_non-gun_-_high-income_countries.png
