Black History Month

I think the real message should be something like "All People with Crappy Lives Matter but Let's not Pretend Racism is Dead".

Your comment was excellent up until this bit.

Ya know, for generations now, oppressed people have been trying to describe their oppression, put words to it, and thus make the world aware that this oppression exists. When they initially start trying to put words to it, they get abuse heaped on them for speaking up at all. Still they persist, and one fine day the world starts paying attention ....

And you know what happens then?

Some piece-of-shit bro from outside the oppressed group is going to show up and claim that oppression for himself.

Women spent decades in activism trying to get sexism taken seriously. When they succeeded, what happened? Men came along and said "Oooh, you know this totally different and totally less serious thing that happens to men? That's sexism too! It's a two way street!"

Black people and other people of color spent decades trying to get the word racism taken seriously. When they finally succeed, what happens? White people come along saying, "Wait I think this other totally different and totally less serious thing that happens to whites should also be called racism, and boo yah, racism is a two way street!"

Black Lives Matter activists weather so much abuse for saying what they say. They've paid for the right to create that movement with real Black Lives that were taken by people who think black lives don't matter, people who were never held accountable by a society that does not believe that black lives matter. But just as soon as BLM starts gaining some mainstream acceptance and traction, what happens? White people come along saying "Hey, white lives matter too! Poor lives matter too! ALL lives matter! This is an all-way-street!"

It's annoying as fuck. They're hijacking the work of activists to make it about themselves, AGAIN.

So no, the real message is not "all people with crappy lives matter", the real message is and always will be "Black Lives Matter." That's the movement, that's the brand, we don't get to take that away from black people and hijack it for any purposes that suit us. If we want to make a movement for all people with crappy lives, then let's do the fucking work from the ground up and build that movement by ourselves. We don't get to steal.
