How about people pay the debts they voluntarily signed for? Or perhaps our society needs to be a bit more cautious about taking on debt.

A million times yes. I graduated with $50k in student loans, hardly a small amount. But it's gone now, I've been loan-free since December 2018 and I graduated in May 2017.

I understand that my situation is far from ordinary but people also act as though this debt is completely insurmountable and they had it forced upon them.

It's not insurmountable, it just requires sacrifices. It's also not being forced onto students, they're willingly taking it on and then complaining that they're being held to account for it. It's ridiculous.
